Your opportunity:

Established in 1859, the University of Toronto's Department of Chemistry is one of the leading andrecognized institutions in Canada. Our department has a wide variety of services including chemical stores, NMR lab, X-Ray analysis lab, and a Mass Spectrometry lab. Reporting to the Principal Investigator (PI), the position provides research group support in the area of administration, laboratory operation and language translation support. The incumbent is also responsible for general laboratory administration of the PI group in the Department of Chemistry.

This is a part-time 60% FTE, term position ending on October 31, 2025, with the possibility of renewal.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Acting as the first point of contact for general enquiries
  • Resolving issues within the scope of the role and escalating problems as required
  • Editing content for grant applications
  • Booking rooms and arranging appropriate accommodations
  • Informing Principal Investigator of concerns or setbacks
  • Verifying the accuracy and completeness of financial elements in grant submissions
  • Editing content for grant applications
  • Determining logistical details and activities for events and/or programming

Essential Qualifications:

  • Completed advanced college diploma (3 years) in Biochemistry or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor's degree in biochemistry or related field preferred.
  • Minimum three (3) years of recent and relevant experience in Lab/office administration, with a minimum of two years of recent and relevant experience in chemistry research laboratory coordination and administration.
  • Demonstrated experience with database management
  • Experience with equipment scheduling and logging
  • Experience managing minor purchases and billing
  • Experience reconciling purchasing card
  • Experience providing research and administrative support including efficiently overseeing schedule/calendar, making travel and hotel arrangements, and ensuring the effective and efficient administration of an office.
  • Experience coordinating the safety training for a chemistry lab
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including proven editing skills
  • Excellent computer skills in the use of standard and/or University software packages including MS Office is required
  • Knowledge of University rules, guidelines and procedures is required
  • Knowledge and experience with updating websites and programming in HTML and CSS
  • Translational skills in Chinese (Cantonese)
  • Ability to understand concepts related to microfluidic and miniaturized systems
