Overview

Conservation Halton (CH) stewards and manages thousands of acres of lands from lake to escarpment. These lands include our eight conservation parks along with other natural lands and passive recreation areas that we manage across our jurisdiction.

Our Conservation Area Strategy guides the future management of these lands, including ensuring that publicly accessible spaces are safe, and non-publicly accessible areas are protected for years to come. To support our Conservation Area Strategy's goals and objectives, CH is undertaking a project to gather data on CH-owned lands.

Your Opportunity

Reporting to the Coordinator, Risk & Enforcement, CH is seeking two (2) Lands Data Technicians to collect, organize and process data for CH-owned lands, including details such as: location, access points, parking, interior roads, infrastructure, signs, fencing, encroachments, hazards, trails, and trail markers.

The primary responsibilities of these positions include:

  • Support and assist the Coordinator, Risk & Enforcement with planning and implementation of the data collection project
  • Complete field data collection of boundaries, infrastructure, and features on CH-owned properties
  • Perform daily field and in-office quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) of collected data
  • Collaborate with GIS team to reconcile, organize, and process the data collected
  • Proactively communicate project progress, challenges and outcomes
  • Undertake minor maintenance for each property, which could include but not limited to, removing branches off trails, putting signs back in place, trimming back large branches, picking up garbage, and marking hazards.
  • Work in accordance with CH Policies & Procedures and the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulation and all other related manuals
  • Other duties as assigned

Your Qualifications

  • Working towards a university degree or college diploma in in Geography, Geomatics, or Environmental Studies program, or related field of study
  • Experience in, or working knowledge of, map reading, orienteering, air photo interpretation, or GPS
  • Use of, or working knowledge of, ArcGIS Survey123 and Field Maps considered an asset
  • Experience using basic hand and landscaping tools such as: Hammer, pruning shears, loppers, pole pruners, hand saws.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
  • Ability to walk for long periods of time and long distances, including in remote locations with inherent hazards (escarpment edges, uneven terrain, etc.).
  • Highly organized and self-motivated with strong time and project management skills
  • Quick learner with the ability to problem solve and adapt to changing situations
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Able to work at any CH designated area as required and travel to a site not serviced by public transportation
  • A valid Ontario Drivers Licence, minimum Class "G.", with a satisfactory Driver's Abstract is required. *Abstract completed by Conservation Halton.
  • Successful candidates must provide own CSA approved safety footwear prior to first day of employment. *Partial reimbursement provided in accordance with the Safety Workwear policy.
