Position Overview:

Provide accurate and authoritative translation with the aid of various translation software programs. Prepare changes/revisions to existing technical publications and/or create new publications in accordance with prescribed specifications in either electronic or hard copy format.

The Writer/Translator position will report to the IMP Aerospace and Defence location near the Halifax International Airport.

What You Will Do:

Translator:

  • Translation of technical (aeronautical/electronics) documentation from English to French.
  • Translation of commercial/administrative documentation from English to French.
  • Terminology research as required.
  • Edit all sub-contracted translation for content and form to meet applicable specifications.
  • Liaise with Production staff for special translation and ensure proofreading of all French text throughout the production process.
  • Advise the immediate supervisors on all aspects of translation, including computerized translation.
  • Assist the immediate supervisors in carrying out estimates.
  • Assist the immediate supervisors in verification of translated material.

Technical Writer:

  • Authoring Technical data in SGML/XML for Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETM).
  • Research engineering drawings, technical specifications, equipment catalogues and other source data, as required, for the purpose of preparing, in a computerized environment, publication changes and revisions.
  • Ensure that the technical data reflects the latest system/equipment configuration.
  • Prepare clear and concise draft material and when required, provide instructions for supporting illustrations.
  • Complete workflow control documentation for draft material.
  • Compile the draft text and illustrations for presentation to the customer, ensuring the product is technically accurate, logically presented, consistent with the appropriate specifications and all customer requirements have been addressed.
  • Assist other technical writers in preparing their work packages for draft manuscript presentations.
  • Other related duties as assigned by immediate supervisors.

What You Will Bring:

  • Degree in translation from a recognized University or equivalent translation training and experience.
  • Certificate in Technical Writing or equivalent training and experience is considered an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written demonstrated language skills in English and French.
  • Working knowledge of computerized word processing
  • Ability to comprehend technical data, general knowledge of aviation terminology and experience would be an asset.
  • Knowledgeable in the use of two or more of the following software platforms: MS Word, Adobe Framemaker, InDesign, Arbortext Epic Editor, Adobe Acrobat, Systran or comparable software for the creation of Technical Publications / translations required. Familiarity with S1000D, ATA, CALs, MIL/STD Specifications, SGML and XML would be considered a definite asset.
  • Experience preferably in a technical environment related to military publications activity would be considered an asset. Some knowledge of common Aircraft, Naval or Land mechanical, electrical or electronic systems may be considered an asset but is not required.
  • Self-starter, dedicated to a high degree of accuracy, pride in workmanship, co-operative, able to work under pressure, thorough and meticulous, strong interpersonal skills and a flair for quality.
