About Us

The Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) is dedicated to safeguarding fire and building safety. Our core functions encompass developing essential policies and programs to uphold and enforce fire safety principles. We actively advise multiple levels of government on matters pertaining to fire protection, working closely with fire service partners throughout the province.

With a team of approximately 20 skilled professionals, our primary focus lies in supporting provincial and municipal partners in their efforts to achieve stringent building and fire safety standards. Additionally, we collaborate with the Fire Service Association of Nova Scotia (FSANS), the Fire Inspectors Association of Nova Scotia (FIANS) to support the fire service and fire inspectors across the province.

About Our Opportunity

We're seeking a motivated and detail-oriented summer student to support the OFM with special projects, data entry, office administration, and assisting with updating our training materials. This is a great opportunity to learn and contribute to public safety initiatives in Nova Scotia.

Primary Accountabilities

As the summer student you will:

  • Assist with various special projects to support the OFM team's operations.
  • Perform data entry and maintain accurate records within our internal databases.
  • Provide general office administration support, including document preparation and file management.
  • Assist in updating and maintaining training materials used for fire safety education.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure smooth workflow and organization.

Qualifications and Experience

You are a 2nd-year business administration or commerce undergraduate student. You must be currently enrolled as a student and returning to school in the fall (or in the next applicable semester for the education program).

You also:

  • Have strong data entry skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Are proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel;
  • An organized and self-motivated individual with a willingness to learn.

While not required, it is considered a strong asset if you have experience with databases (such as SQL).


We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions

  • Work Location: 250 Baker Drive, Dartmouth, NS.
  • Free on-site parking is available.
  • Please note that there is limited or no access to public transit near this location.

Most of your time is spent in a comfortable office setting with 35-hour weeks, 7-hour days. You may occasionally be required to move/lift light objects such as office supplies, equipment, and files.

Pay Grade: HOURLY

Salary Range: $18.22 - $29.69 Hourly
