The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service investigates deaths of persons who die from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, suddenly when in apparent good health, when unattended by a physician, in a correctional facility, or in any suspicious or unusual manner. Our service is also responsible for approving cremations.
The Medical Examiner Service serves the people of Nova Scotia by providing impartial, professional, compassionate, and accurate medicolegal death investigation. We serve Nova Scotians by providing compassionate service that meets the highest standards of science. We are committed to educating the next generation of forensic scientists. We collaborate with our partners in health care and health surveillance to prevent deaths.
As a Casual Administrative Assistant, you will be responsible for assisting with secretarial, administrative and various related functions for individuals such as the Director, Medical Examiners, and management team. The most significant of these functions includes tracking of data and processes, communication and correspondence with the public and Medical Examiner Service stakeholders, typing and proofreading correspondence, creating spreadsheets, and calendar/schedule management.
This role includes, but is not limited to the following:
• Team calendars and schedule management.
• Supply and equipment management, ordering, inventory, invoices, coordinating technical support.
• Support management and medical examiners with administrative related activities.
The successful candidate will have completed a one-year commercial course plus have three (3) years of administrative experience. An acceptable equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
Our ideal candidate will have experience dealing with the public under difficult circumstances and be capable of constructive, empathetic, professional communication. You will be proficient in typing, using word processing, spreadsheets, email and calendar applications, and will have superior data entry, documentation, grammar and proof-reading skills.
As the successful candidate, you will demonstrate effective organizational and prioritizing skills as well as the ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a very busy office. The ability to maintain confidentiality is essential in this role.
A general understanding of medical and/or justice services and provincial government in general, would be considered assets in this role.

The work environment may include exposure to various sensory triggers based on the type of work performed at the location.
This is a Casual position, scheduled to work 12hrs per week for the duration of the assignment, The position is anticipated to be required until December 31, 2025.
Pay Grade: HOURLY
Salary Range: $24.05 - $26.91 Hourly
