Peer writing tutors work with clients (mostly NAIT students) on improving writing skills via one-on-one appointments, group appointments, and drop-in tutoring sessions. Tutoring may occur virtually or in person in the NAIT Writing Centre.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Help NAIT students from all program areas understand writing assignments and develop and plan writing processes, including:
  • Organizing ideas, developing arguments, and creating strong thesis statements and topic sentences.
  • Integrating primary & secondary sources.
    • Review essays, research papers, technical reports, and other types of writing for flow, focus, clarity, and conciseness.
    • Coach students to adopt effective writing, proofreading, and self-editing strategies.
    • Discuss Canadian writing conventions and academic expectations with international and multilingual students.
    • Promote the Writing Centre services in various events.


    Skills & Abilities:

    • Research, writing and communication skills.
    • Ability to assess student tutoring needs.
    • Ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals and groups.


    Qualifications:

    • Successful completion of at least one semester of course load at NAIT with a GPA of 3.75.
    • Must be registered in NAIT courses throughout employment.
    • Tutoring experience of up to 12 months at a post-secondary learning/writing centre is an asset.
    • Experience working with ESL/EAL students is an asset.
    • Equivalencies may be considered.

    Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services or the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).

    Remuneration: $15.00 per hour, plus 12% in lieu of statutory holidays and vacation accrual. (Classification - Tutor I).

    This casual opportunity is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
