Automation of administrative tasks has not reduced the role of administrative employees. On the contrary, the sector continues to grow. Here, according to Randstad, are the most highly sought administrative jobs in Canada.
Technology and accounting. These are, in 2018, the sector’s two safe bets. If you have either (or both) of these skills, your chances of finding a job in administration is increased significantly, especially in the larger cities. Indeed, according to Randstad, the mostly highly sought after skills mainly involve technology and the tasks related to accounting. Although technology is steadily growing, reliance on accounting skills has been seen for some years now. And a shortage of administrative support job openings is far from rearing its head in Canada!
The jobs most in demand
Administrative assistant, receptionist and office manager and clerk are the four most popular positions in 2018 in Quebec and Canada. This is due to the fact that they support the work of other employees and assist managers. For the same reasons, executive assistant positions are also very much in demand.
Since the most sought after administrative skills are related to accounting, the position of bookkeeper ranks for the first time this year as one of the jobs most in demand. Similarly, the professions of accounts receivable clerks and office administrators are highly sought after by companies.
Moreover, according to Randstad, the sectors hiring the most are administration, retail sales, manufacturing, wholesale and healthcare. In addition, office employees are sought after in both the public and private sectors.
Administrative positions are growing
While there are currently 1.8 million office and administrative professionals in Canada, an increase in the number of positions was recorded last year. The census reported 4,270 new jobs. In addition, the large cities such as Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa and Montreal accounted for most of these jobs, since that is where the largest companies are.
Finally, the average administrative salary in Montreal varies between $27,800 and $42,100 — and in Quebec City between $26,100 and $36,250. In 2018, the median salary of an administrative support professional is $39,800, while last year it was $37,000.
